:pirate: Anyone watch the Olypics opening? I didn't.

My weekend on the Island ended up having a big pile of Manien's family weirdness, so there was this big black cloud hanging over the whole weekend. I did get in some serious playing, and solved a dozen or more magical crime cases with my niece and nephew.

:totem1: Ugh, no fun!
:drawing: I suspect it will be hard to get much of this done this week. We are finally getting our ceiling repaired (poor construction of a deck has led to leaking - poor construction done by Manien's dad!).

:food: I was all agitated and messed up and went home for lunch. As I was eating I was reading the latest Game of Thrones book and the chapter I was on kept referring to all the gruesome tortures heaped on this guy and I'm like "Dude, not while I'm eating."

:qotd: Favourite Olympic sport to watch or play?

:pirate: Nah, can't give a fuck about giving a fuck.

:qotd: I honestly dunno. I'd try curling just for the hell of it.

:qotd: I like to watch the sports I actually know something about because I did them as a kid, but that means it's actually hard for me to find the things I want to watch because I was into what I guess are obscure sports (the stuff that is fun for an anti-social kid who doesn't like team play). I probably spent the most time doing horseback riding and archery. I managed to catch most of the equestrian eventing yesterday, but I still haven't been able to see any of the archery competitions, despite the five channels that are airing Olympic events. Oh, and I also did some fencing in middle school and high school, and I've caught one match of that which was pretty interesting (it was women's foil Italy vs. South Korea, I think).
On the other hand, I've been taking swimming lessons this summer, so I have been paying closer attention to the swimming races. Now I know enough that I can look at them and say, "oh, that is what I am supposed to be doing."

:qotd: Yeah, I have no interest at all in watching the Olympics. Or any sports. I did happen to see one swimming race on the weekend at the inlaws. It was hard to find footage online, even the CBC which plays the darned things on tv - they didn't seem to have the individual races online to watch. Or maybe they did and their site was just super un-intuitive.

But anyways, I love the parts of the race where the swimmers were changing direction, and they would show them from underwater. It looks quite magical.

I'm not a sports guy, but I do, in theory, like the olympics. It's neat seeing sports you don't see that often. And there are some amazing superhuman feats to marvel at in events like gymnastics and diving where even the guys who suck make you go "holy shit! how is that even possible!?"

But I never turn it on for myself. I only watch if somebody else is watching. So I like it, but somehow not quite enough to expend the energy to view it.

Oh I forgot that the other reason I like watching the Olympics is to see all the different body types and get to know what type of physiques work for different activities, so that when I draw characters I should be theoretically designing them more accurately. Like I noticed this year that the American women gymnasts had more developed back and shoulder muscles, getting closer to what muscles the men gymnasts have traditionally developed, instead of all looking like very tiny and slight young girls. The really interesting one was the women's water polo; they mostly all had really strong arm and shoulder muscles so they can throw the ball and block each other and win stuggles for the dropped ball, but the lower halves of their bodies were left mostly alone to develop a little more natural flotation so that they could sit in the water for a long time without getting fatigued.
